it feels like i've known you longer
a best friend.. or more like
a sister was what you were
honest and rare..
today you leave, not seas away..
it's hard.. hard to leave
harder to see a loved one leave
but we both know, it's a plane ride away..
i know we promised, to call and text
but distance scares me, it parts friends..
and makes one learn to live without them
as tears roll down my cheek
with memories kept close..
i wish you success, in everything you do
you will be missed.. dearly..
come back soon!

Sri Lanka Highlighted
the absence for a month or so meant going on vacation. yes to Sri Lanka! this is so I'd reminisce throughout the year...
- It all started with the most amazing dumplings in singapore. thanks shorty!
- the initial gush of hot air and the feeling of being boiled and overflowing in my skinny jeans, right when you exit the flight
- just hanging out with parents, and doing whatever they wanted to, going wherever they wanted to take you - seeing the smiles in their face.. happiness!
- home cooked food
- surprisingly, just the few times of shopping.. and mom swiping the plastic. yay me!
- impressive selection of coffee joints in and around colombo, rather Tea joints in my case. and dude the coffee places amaze the balls out of me.. a coffee was more expensive that a starbucks frap. jeez!
- great lunch and quiet dinner dates with N, K, and S (separately duh!).. catching up on each other's lives.
- many coffee dates with friends.. and feeling rather godey not knowing where the watchamacallit veranda or the mews is..
- meeting B after years.. i will visit you there, i promise!
- random meet ups and interesting conversations with friends, regardless of the place and time... when I felt like i could bitch slap Timing and continents!
- thanks for the beach fix even if it was rather short
- quite interesting revelations by a close friend.. felt much closer after. thank you and i miss you!
- brought me a smile when people still had my phone number even after so many years and knew the call was from me. felt special!
- Another's engagement..
- When bestie came to see me just coz I have the flu, and the many long chats, even if there was nothing to talk.. it just felt good!
- the Acupuncture and ayurveda.. gah the sciatica!
- Night outs with different and random lots.. letting lose on the dance floor, I still got the crazy in me.
- Seeing the expression on her face when I said I don't really drink, and needn't drink to have a good time.. she was speechless, literally! and was she ever glad i didn't drink after the one night we had..
- driving for the first time in colombo, full throttle! exhausting..
- smiles, and the laughter over drinks and appies.. of old, real, genuine friends..
- most of all, I miss Amma~
May be the one time I felt I should move back, for good. Feel like I'm missing out a lot, especially with family, as the parents get older.
'til next time..

Death of an Unknown
I knew you, knew of you
but didn't know you well enough..
never saw you in flesh and blood
but saw your soul within
imperfect you must have been,
but Perfect I knew you as..
today I hear that you are gone
gone forever..
I'm saddened of your departure
speechless for once..
I wish I knew you more, I really do..
vain words they may be now,
but sorry I didn't say hello,
nor wrote two words to see how you were..
may you Rest In Peace

thank you for making me smile and laugh
thank you for touching my heart.. n soul
numerous times, with a phone call from seas away..
You my friend, will always be remembered
wrapped in a corner of my heart..

Weekend in a Nutshell
weekends I find, are interesting... more often that not I'm left with nothing to do but watch movies and read or stumble upon adventures of unplannedness. Other times, I have these somewhat planned more eventful ones, which gives me a funked up Monday thinking wtf did I do this weekend. The last one;
- Awesome Friday night, hanging out with a friend, discovering a new restaurant in an old town.
- Experimenting new things
- A drive home in the wee hours; calm and quiet enough highway, all to myself, with a mind of my own
- Gifts of Champagne and cake for a birthday in the sin city; wish I saw the moment, the face
- that, ladies and gentlemen is how you make someone feel special
- myself and the mall, expensive addictions and predictable past times
- new boots (face palm), meh jeans, and yoga mats
- afternoon naps, Toy Story 3, and chat with besty
- showing up in sweats for lunch at family to find out they were having company over, and it was a full blown lunch event. Thanks for the memo!
- Arguments for the love of Mahinda (no thank you), with some blindly faithful family (i'm embarrassed). Left me Sunday evening with a pissy mood.
- Listening to mom ranting through skype, while I dress for work.
- To find out on Monday morning that my friend's r6 just got stolen.
- at least the recreation awaits

a far cry
a lot of the people I grew up with including me.. we live far far away from home.. all over the world, across continents. Haven't seen each other for god knows how long and a random hi/hello on messenger or facebook is all there is. or better yet the happy birthday wishes on facebook, that too is thanks to the auto reminder application.. anywhoo, it shows we are there, alive and well.. and we still care..
everyone including myself, is always grumbly and nostalgic about leaving sri lanka and only going there for few weeks a year, that too if you are lucky.. and how we miss the food, the sandy beach, the hot weather.. and everything that we leave behind.
this got me thinking, that yearning we have, that longing to go to the land we can say we truly belong.. what is it.. do we only say it because we know we have an alternative? because we know that no matter how short/long the vacation is, we'll go back to the western world at the end.. that we almost call home now? only coz there's no abundance of pilawoos kottu around the big cities we live in? I question myself, what would I have felt if I had no other option but was in sri lanka, and didn't know the difference of being away.. would I be sitting at home thinking why am I here? or would I be a happy poppy..
now I'm far from home.. counting days to go back..
sitting here thinking wtf am I doing here..

my first Rodeo

Is there any better way to spend your Saturday night?
The boy friend, had bought me a ticket to go see the Saturday night professional bull riding championships. I didn't know such thing existed in this area.. and never been to a bull riding event ever. TV was the channel I knew about them and I was pretty skeptical when he said that I'm going (yes I was forced to go with them) for this thing on Saturday...
One of the guys who'd gone the day before was grumbling that it was boring, so he was a mood killer, and I almost wanted to stay home but reading my text book looked way more boring! and this was the day of the 'finals' apparently., and it was indoors (in the middle of a winter) so off I went to this thing with a bunch of guys..
as a matter of fact I should say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. great seats! It was quite entertaining. I've got to say the bull riders (the hunky cowboys!) are extremely brave to get on that bull who looks like it's on some kind of steroids.. I would piss my pants to even go close..
unfortunately didn't have a camera.. but I'm so glad I went to check out what it's like. I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I had no clue of how they were judged, or where these people were from etc..
thank you google images

Two week getaway
The trip was might I say Fabulous! especially an escape from the cold winter for two weeks felt like heaven.. but dude was it HOT.. and yeah because i was going from the single digits to the upper twenties within twenty four hours.
anywhoo... was great seeing my family who I haven't seen for over three years, and friends.. whoever's left in sri lanka and the ones visiting for Christmas. I should say, Christmas/new years was a real good time if you wanted to do a reunion or whatever.. all the birds looks to be flying homewards during that time. I was amazed by how many random meet-ups I could fit in with my 'global' friends..
inflation rate in sri lanka has gone to dogs i say! i can't believe how groceries, clothes, transportation, or rather everything has become so bloody expensive. How do people afford to live? When I was planning my trip I thought I would shop my socks off and get great deals, save lots on clothes.. ahh nah! that wasn't the case. the savings weren't by much if at all. people complaint how stuff is so expensive, but odel and the usual shopping places were packed.. i guess it was Christmas! I was just amazed at how cash flew out of my wallet in a matter of couple hours.
what's with everyone running to coffee shops to spend rs.400 for a coffee. So a friend and I planned an evening together and we were too early for dinner.. his sister had recommended one coffee bean, and off we go to "hang out" for couple hours before we went ahead with dinner plans. I paid rs800 (including tax) for two lattes and I swear i can buy two lattes at Starbucks or in another coffee shop in this city for the same price! mind you, the minimum wage here is $8 something an hour. how do people in sri lanka afford all this!?!?! but I mean it's a good thing that there are several 'hang out' places like that in sri lanka that the young-ens could just chill, and don't necessarily have to have a meal with friends..
All in all I had lots of fun. caught up with at least a few. hope to plan another trip this year.. may be!

life hasn't been..
that interesting nor eventful lately.. didn't really have much to write.. nor did I have the time to get online coz despite the uneventfulness, i've been busy like a bee with everything and nothing..
roomy's away for the long weekend and I have the whole place for myself.. loving it.. feels like the old times when i used to live on my own. Good friday was spent with a friend downtown.. walking about.. greek food (yummoo!).. and shoe shopping.. (flaws flaws).. two girls at a shoe sale.. what more can one expect .. oh well.. good times..
recreation's going on still.. very randomly, even thought i'd like to have a routine, i haven't gotten to that part yet. I will eventually. May be I should start going for a salsa class or something. they are stupid expensive here I think, not that I have looked into any..
my randomness goes on..

eyesight matters
my eyes are not the best, but I have full 20-20 vision and I do not need glasses to do my day-to-day stuff. but since of late (I mean like since last year) I've been getting headaches after a full day of work and every night it's headache medicine or else the whole night's screwed. So I go to the eye doc and he prescribes another pair of glasses especially for computer and reading purposes.. 'another' meaning yes I had glasses from before but never used them coz I hate wearing glasses to start with ::S:S. i know it's my own fault but oh well... anyway, the new pair was used for the first few months and then thrown away.. rather couldn't find or didn't bother.. and now I've been getting the daily headaches so I'm back to the geekness! but hey I have farsightedness or whatever.. so I only wear glasses for the computer and reading.. I always thought that kind of glasses are for when you get to your naughty forties.. i'm only half way there but argh~
compared to my friends, family, and co-workers, my eyes are better.. at least I think they are.. yesterday I went to see the eye specialist with a friend.. well not for me but for my friend.. coz the friend has to get a cornea transplant : it sounded scary but it's more popular (not just among adults, also among younger people) than I thought it is.. it's sad how a lot more people nowadays have to wear some kind of aid to see just to do daily stuff...
oh well... i think i complaint too much.. come to think of it, problems with your eyesight is no small matter..

of sororities and shopping...
what's this blogging about weekends.. may be i'm too pre-occupied during the weekdays I don't pay much attention to stuff happening around me or nothing really happens.. heh
friday noonish, phone rings at work.. friend of mine calls and talks me into going across that night with a bunch of girls for shopping.. wooot! in my mind - there goes my pay cheque. that's one of my new year resolutions by the way, reducing the amount of money spent on shopping.. esp. shoes and clothes..
anyway inevitably I say yes sir! go home pack a few .. hit the road... the girls I had to hang out with were those sorority types that I hate the most.. I don't even know how to describe them I just know they are those annoying and bitchy kind, who sorta walks about five feet off the ground and live in a dreamy world..
'like' was almost the only word they knew.. for ex. 'my phone bill like was so like expensive, and like my dad like was not like impressed'..that by the way was an actual sentence that came outa one of them.. anyways that ain't my business.. however I think it was a big generalization and a stereotyping from my part.. when you get to know them it wasn't that bad. they were quite nice and i think have good intentions and a big heart inside... or not..
the weekend I thought will be a nightmare and one of the worst, didn't turn out that bad afterall..
for better or worse, I didn't shop 'til I drop... quite happy about that!

bubbly buble & fun times..
been busy and had to return my new laptop coz it was not charging and so was defective. had to move back to my good old one and it's too old to do anything on it sigh!
anyways... went to watch buble in concert two weeks back.. the reason I couldn't blog for a while must have been coz I was mesmerized by him! I was never a huge jazz fan.. I listen to anything but the neck-breaking stuff anyways.. so yeah I always wanted to go see this guy. and so i did it was awesome! he was not just a great singer but also a great entertainer..
last weekend was nothing but fun! went across the sea to visit some friends and we had a BLAST.. we did nothing but eat, sleep.. and them trying to get me drunk :D.. me drinking shirley temples and acting as if I had a big girl ST. went to this nepalese(sp?) restaurant, and it was the best food in the world.. it almost tasted a bit like lankan.. just felt divine!
that weekend was just great and classic time with friends.. catching up.. and it just felt great to have that comfort level with people that you met not so long ago..
all will be cherished memories that i'll hold dear..

take care and BS...
I think all of us are used or accustomed to certain good bye clauses/phrases, be it email, texting, chatting or any other means.. a lot of it has been shortened.. tc for take care.. ttyl for talk to u later so on and so forth right..
so recently i was talking to a friend of mine who i've known for a long time and we were just catching up with each others lives on msn and the conversation was wrapping up. I had to go off and so did he. then it was the time for the good byes. I said my good byes with a take care and a budusaranai (a religious phrase - that I'd say only to family and close friends depending on the person and the situation), and gave regards to the family etc. He in turn says take care (tc) and bs, leaving me with nothing but a ?
After a few minutes I figured and he sorta typed (guessing that I was confused) that BS is budusaranai, just that everyone had made it short.. im like wtf?:S?!?!? BS is Bull Shit in my vocab and in many of the people I know but this is new and does not feel right lol.. I got this BS phrase on an email sometime back too in which I ignored for a typo or something like that and never bothered to question about..
Quite interesting and understandable how people have shortened words up for texting purposes and stuff, without realizing that BS is bull shit for a lot of ppl.. if there's no space for something like that in a text msg I'd rather not say it.. anyway that's just my opinion..

Saturday Bliss
We've been wanting to do this for a while and I haven't actually done this before, so I was quite excited for this blissful spa hopping and was counting days for the Saturday even though we didn't have an appointment scheduled beforehand :D. Anyways so, my friend and I called up on Friday to few spas and it was difficult to get an appointment in such short notice and especially in the weekend. I didn't know that people go for spas this much.. coz i swear we called more than five places to get an appointment..
However, we were able to squeeze in an appointment in one of the spas downtown. It was quite high end I'd say but reasonable. Since I haven't been to one before I didnt really know wot the hell to expect. We were to go in this infrared sauna thing, it was great.. then shower.. then the one hour massage.. omg that was pure bliss.. euphoric. the hour felt like forever and wish it never ended.. so relaxing... all the back pains I had because of the stupid chair I have at work, vanished!
It's a great few hour getaway and a guilty pleasure I'd say... not so blissful on the wallet..
however.. I'd do that again!

lost, toilet house, rain
weekly dose of survivor was interesting, but one of my fav's was voted out.. crappy.. oh wel i wont win the million bucks anyways..
y do i feel like a lost soul or some wasted space.. people who are closer to u get upset for the simplest thing that one would think they wouldn't..
while at work i was reading Mr. Toilet has built a toilet shaped house.. how gay to spend that much time, energy, and money on building a toilet house..
need to work on the academics in a serious manner.. i need someone to drill it into my head or something.. weather's been crappier than ever, and it gets dark so soon and the drive back home from work is horrible.. dark and pouring rain..
may be I should hide myself under the quilt..

A weekend ends
It always feels good to have a three-day weekend. I had big plans for the weekend. Especially to start on my final project that's due in less than a month. Procrostination is what I do best and starting the project was obviously the last thing I attended to this weekend.. so to start with I had a boarder line escapade on friday night with a friend of mine. gladly it ended at this side and we were able to sleep in our own comfy beds that night.
saturday came along still no sign of a project whatsoever, eventhough I had my equipment sort of laid out on the table. that's good for a starter now don't you think? drove for about half hour to see friends and pick some much needed equipment for the project. thanks to couple of friends i didn't have to buy those just for a month and a few. had lunch at nando's with my best bud, and another who was in town for reading break. then off i go pick up those stuff, go see cousin, go see my girl friend who I seldom see now. we did a little hair straightening session with her new bought straightner. it was the first time i completely straightened my hair. do some grocery shopping and drive home.. still no sign of a project.. saturday night was interesting, my friend was having drinks with his guy friends and got pissed for something off he drives over and was a bit of drama there. it's always good to have a lil drama in ur life now isn't it?!?
the morning of sunday I fix all the equipment together to see whether my network and the rest is actually working.. with some effort and twisting of wires.. voila! it is actually working.. me happy! off i go with a friend of mine, watch this hindi movie my girl friend recommended. it was alright, colorful as usual, and full of songs.. good for a change, as I haven't watched a hindi movie for a while. come home, sleep, sleep and more sleep.. haven't still started the write-up and there's more to work on the practical still..
monday being a holiday, sleep in! :D go for thai with a friend, do a little shopping come home and blog.. started the write-up and kinda clueless at the moment.. time to call the advisor..
a weekend wasted..
'til next time.. stay outa big trouble!

I call him malli, but he's not. Age-wise he's actually about 5+ months older than I am. Not related to me in any way (as far as I know). The term 'malli' is from what his parents/family call him, and I got used to it since he felt like family to me, or even closer. We've been friends for a long time, hmm since we took classes together and our special friendship is about 6 long years.
We had our ups and downs, you've cried to me so have I. Many happy times, few heartbreaks, but yet you and I have never fought nor have we stopped talking. Even though we live miles apart and see each other may be once a year or even less, we always have been able to keep in touch this way or the other. One person who's always been there for me, have had faith in me, and encouraged me in every way possible. The lamest jokes we cracked and the little inside jokes we had made it all the more fun and memorable.
He's someone I'll never fall for, nor would I secretly think the other way around. Thank you for taking care of me, being there for me, and more than anything listening to me..
I miss those hours long phone calls (that sent home five figure phone bills), in which we talked about everything and nothing. I miss watching movies, the movies we both loved. I miss those times we just hung out and talked about life and where it'll take us, and where we want to go and what we want to become.
wish you were closer...
I miss you!
